Workshop on The Benefit of Online Collaborative Learning through iEARN

Internet is a tool that can create and support an online learning environment. Its ability to promote computer mediated communication, that is, the use of computer networks to allow learners in different geographical locations to interact with one another. The opportunity for reflective interaction can be encouraged and supported, through online collaborative project work.

This workshop has considered that online collaborative learning is a very enriching process, both for teachers and students. It is clear that the teacher’s role in a group is that of a guide, rather than that of an authoritarian ruler (traditional teaching). It is rewarding that students learn by themselves, learn more, learn interpersonal/ social skills, feel more involved, feel more dedicated, feel more confident, enjoy the class, teach each other, become independent learners, and become better citizens of the world.

1. NEW MY IDENTITY, YOUR IDENTITY ACTIVITY. Check out this new project activity, facilitated by Said Belgra from Morocco and Nagwa Hussein from Egypt. In this activity, students discuss their traditional celebrations and the famous monuments and landmarks in their countries. 9. US HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER WINS EDUCATION AWARD. Connie Detjen, a social studies and Spanish teacher at Meridian High School in Haslett, Michigan, USA, has been named winner of the 2007 Loy LaSalle Global Education Award. The award was presented at the Greater Lansing United Nations Association International Awards Dinner on Oct. 21. Connie was honored for her international activities, including a --Books for Africa-- project in 2006 and 2007 that collected about 3,000 books each year in the Haslett Public Schools and sent them to African schools and libraries. She introduced Meridian High School students to iEARN in 2004.

15. MEARN (iEARN-MOROCCO) TO ORGANIZE STUDENTS UNLIMITED PROJECT WORKSHOP, NOVEMBER 16-17. 20 teachers, along with students, from 10 Moroccan cities, will come together on November 16-17 at the MEARN office in Rabat. The workshop will focus on how to integrate project-based learning and community service into the classroom, using the iEARN Students Unlimited Project as a model. As a follow up, students will share their projects in a national conference that will take place in April 2008.

Weekly Highlight: Indonesian Youth Receive Mini Grants to Implement Projects

After participating in the Global Connections program for three years, iEARN Indonesia has established the iEARN Community Youth Service Club as part of their activities. This program was launched during the national workshop held in Jakarta on November 23-24, 2007 in which 31 teachers, 10 facilitators, and 14 students from 10 provinces of Indonesia participated. Seeking to generate youth-run community service projects, students will receive a $200 alumni mini grant through ECA funding. During the conference, students developed five project proposals: an environmental project aiming to save the protected area in Gunung Halimun, West Java; the planting of mangroves to protect the coastline from tidal waves and tsunamis; visiting an orphanage in South Jakarta; working with street children in the neighborhood; and holding a Community Workshop on Natural Disaster Education.
